Hi! My name is Christian. I’m five years old, and I’m super excited to go back to school and see my friends!
At Easterseals, I have friends who learn and communicate in different ways, just like me. We play together, learn together, and have lots of fun.
My favorite part of the day is circle time! Sometimes I get to choose our morning song. I don’t use words to talk, so I use my iPad to show my teacher which song I want everyone to sing. Then we all get instruments and play along. Shaker eggs are my favorite!
My iPad helps me communicate lots of things. I can make choices, tell someone what I want or need, and ask for help. My teachers help me practice using it, and my family uses it with me at home, too.
I also see things a little differently. I have something called CVI (cortical visual impairment). My eyes can see, but sometimes my brain needs extra time and help to understand what I’m looking at. My teachers know how to help me.
When I’m learning my letters and numbers, they use yellow letters on a black background. The high contrast makes them easier for me to see. My teachers know where to place things so I can see them better, not to show me too many things at once, and to give me extra time to look. That helps me learn!
I can use the things I learn at Easterseals when I’m with my family, too. We use my pictures and my iPad all the time at home and when we go places. They help me understand what is happening and help me communicate what I need.
Every morning when I get off the bus and see my teachers and friends, I know I’m somewhere I can learn, play, and be me. I can’t wait to learn new things, try new things, and show everyone what I can do this year!
